RESOURCE DIRECTORY:
ORGANIZING DISASTER ANIMAL RESPONSE TEAMS (DARTs)

Individuals or groups responding to animal needs in emergencies should have extensive experience in disaster response, animal handling, first aid for humans and animals, and knowledge of local and state laws regarding animals. They should be able to provide proof of training and should agree to work within the local community’s animal disaster plan. In considering who should be involved, it’s helpful to think inclusively, not exclusively. Some examples of agencies and organizations who should be partnered in the planning process include
· Animal control authorities
· Humane societies and rescue organizations
· Veterinarians and veterinary technicians
· Law enforcement/fire/rescue
· Animal groups or clubs (kennel clubs, bird clubs, horse associations, etc.)
· UNH Cooperative Extension Service
· Wildlife agencies and wildlife rehabilitators
· Pet supply industry (pet supply stores, feed stores, etc.)
· Livestock associations

Your town may wish to identify and train its own DART or sign a memorandum of understanding with another town with this resource.
